Use the TZO web server to share your digital photos

Using the TZO webserver to share your digital camera pictures with others on the Internet.

Not everyone has their own web server running 24/7, but there are times when you want to share your digital camera pictures with friends and family. This tutorial shows you how to share your digital camera pictures using the TZO web server. By following this tutorial, you will be able to connect your Digital Camera to your Windows powered PC, and host these photos on your server for others to see. Please note that if you have a router or firewall, you need to open the proper ports on your router so others can access your server. To see how to open ports in your server, please see our router pages for tutorials

BEFORE STARTING: Install your digital camera software and drivers:
The first step is to read your camera documentation and install the camera software. You should only need to do this once, before you connect the camera to the computer. Read your instructions that came with the camera, some may not need anything installed to read the pictures from your camera.

STEP 1) Connect your digital camera to your computer:
Most Digital Camera's are USB capable. You should now connect your USB cable that came with the camera to your camera, and then plug the USB end into the computer.
Now you should go to the desktop, and click the MY COMPUTER Icon. You see a listing of your disk drives on your computer. Look for a "REMOVABLE DISK", typically lettered "E:" or higher as shown highlighted below:

STEP 2) Move or Copy your pictures from your camera to your computer:
You should now see the screenshot below. The Removable Disk drive is typically your CAMERA memory card. Double click on the REMOVABLE DISK (E:) or whatever drive letter shows the removable disk on your PC. If you do not see a removable disk, please consult your digital camera manual for details on moving pictures from your camera to your computer.

You should now DOUBLE CLICK on the Removable Disk as shown highlighted in the screenshot above. In the screenshot below, we show the Removable Disk contents once we double click - your contents may look different from the shot below. Please note that since we are using a Nikon CoolPix digital camera, we need to go into 2 folders to see our pictures. Nikon uses a DCIM folder, and within the DCIM folder, is a 100NIKON folder. The 100NIKON folder is where our pictures are located.

STEP 2a) Double Click the 100NIKON Folder
You should now see something similar to the shot below. Within the DCIM folder, is a 100NIKON folder. The 100NIKON folder (shown highlighted below) is where our pictures are located.

STEP 2b) Locating your pictures (.jpg) files in the 100NIKON Folder
You should now see something similar to the shot below showing the pictures inside the 100NIKON folder. Digital cameras typically name the pictures SOMETHING.JPG
Since we have located our pictures, we now want to move them to the MY PICTURES folder on our PC.

STEP 2c) Selecting all your pictures (.jpg) files from the 100NIKON Folder
You should now click the EDIT menu, and click SELECT ALL from the menu.

STEP 2d) Moving all your pictures (.jpg) files to the MY PICTURES Folder
You should now click the EDIT menu, and click MOVE TO FOLDER... from the menu.

STEP 2e) Selecting the folder where to move your pictures (.jpg)
You should now click the MY PICTURES folder as shown in the screenshot below. If you do not see a folder called my pictures, you can click MAKE NEW FOLDER or NEW FOLDER, and copy the pictures to that folder that you just created.

STEP 3) USING TZO to create your Photo Sharing web site: You should have TZO running and your domain name should be "ONLINE as YOURNAME.TZO.COM" as shown similar to the screenshot below. Click the WEB SERVER tab, and then click the SETTINGS tab. Once you click settings, you may or may not have the server enabled, or in a different mode other than Photo Mode. You should then click the MODE dropdown list, and select PHOTOS as shown below.

STEP 3a) USING TZO to create your Photo Sharing web site:
Now select the FOLDER by clicking the ... button and select the MY PICTURES folder as shown in the screenshot below and click OK.

STEP 3b) USING TZO to create your Photo Sharing web site:
Now click the APPLY button and TZO will then start resizing and working to create your website. This process typically takes a few seconds. It may take up to 2-3 minutes depending on how many pictures you have in your folder. Once this is completed, your website is ready for viewing. Make sure the TZO Web Server is running, the GREEN light under the APPLY button shows the server status. If you see the light is red, and the server is stopped, click START to start it. Then click the TEST TZO WEB PAGE in the bottom left corner of the screenshot shown below.

That's It! Your browser should launch and you should see your website. This is what others will see. You can go back to the TZO client and play with the PHOTO server settings, such as Rows, Columns, Thumbnail Size, Preview size, as well as background and text color settings.

Have fun! Still Stumped? Try checking out the TZO Help File. This is an online help file that details all of the TZO functions, including advanced web server functions. Have fun running your own Photo sharing web server sharing your pictures with your friends and family. Please note that if you have a router or firewall, you need to open the proper ports on your router so others can access your server. To see how to open ports in your server, please see our router pages for tutorials
