Setting up Windows File Sharing using Windows XP

INTRODUCTION: Using Windows File sharing, you can share files, folders and disk space between computers on your network. This tutorial will show you how to enable Simple Windows File Sharing to “fetch” files from one PC on your network.

Step 1) Set a Static IP address on your system you wish to access to retrieve or store files on. In this tutorial we have our Windows XP system set to a static IP of 192.168.1.200. This is assuming that your Linksys router is setup as the default LAN IP of 192.168.1.1, if not, adjust accordingly.

Step 2) You now want to enable File Sharing on the PC . In this example, we have files on our Work PC that we want to be able to access from Home, so we enable File sharing on our Work PC. Open MY COMPUTER to view your disks. In most cases, the folder you want to share is on your C: Drive. In this example, we have a folder called DATA and within that folder we have a folder called WorkDocs that we want to share and gain access to read and write files. Double click on the C Drive to see the contents of the drive, and then double-click on DATA and you will see the folder called WorkDocs. Right Click on WorksDocs folder and select SHARING AND SECURITY as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 3) If this is the first time you setup File sharing you will see the screenshot shown below. Click the radio button titled JUST ENABLE FILE SHARING and click OK.

Step 4) Windows XP will now show you yet another dialog box as shown below to finally enable and share the folder and the files within that folder. Make sure you click SHARE THIS FOLDER ON THE NETWORK and then type in the name WorkDocs as the share name. You can call this whatever you want, but you must remember the name to access the files. If you wish to WRITE to this folder as well, you can enable the ALLOW NETWORK USERS TO CHANGE MY FILES and this will allow you to read, write and delete. If this is NOT checked, users will only be able to READ files and not write or delete from this share. Click OK and you are finished with the file sharing setup.
