SOLUTIONS - Using your VPN (Virtual Private Network) and an Internet connection to access files and resources remotely....

What is a VPN (Virtual Private Network) and can it help me gain access to my office or home network remotely?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a secure method of accessing your files, printers and other network resources via a secure connection over the Internet. VPN's are a great way to provide this remote connectivity to a remote network without compromising security. A VPN typically consists of a "server" and a "client". The VPN server can be a server such as a Microsoft Small Business Server, A Windows XP Server, A Cisco VPN concentrator, or something like a Netgear FVL328 router - which acts as a VPN router - or VPN endpoint. The "client" would be a remote user that is running VPN software or hardware that connects via IP to the Server/Concentrator or VPN Endpoint. When the VPN client wants to connect to the server, a secure data "tunnel" is setup, so that all the data that passes back and forth between the client and server are encrypted. This encryption keeps out prying eyes. A VPN is mostly used to secure connections between remote users and remote offices to the main office.

How do I purchase and setup a VPN (Virtual Private Network)?

The first step is to work with your local IT consultant or computer company or contact a company that specializes in VPN's and VPN routers and concentrators. Some popular VPN software and hardware products are made by Microsoft, Cisco/Linksys, Netgear, D-Link and many others. If you decide to purchase a hardware router to handle your VPN server and clients, make sure you buy the SAME MODEL ROUTER for each end (client and server). Work with the IT professional to set up the VPN according to the instructions, and make sure it works remotely using the current Internet IP address. This will verify that the VPN is setup and working properly before adding in TZO. Once the VPN is installed and configured properly, the next step is to install the TZO software somewhere on the same network as the VPN server, or you can install the TZO DDNS service in the router. See below for complete steps on getting TZO to work with your VPN setup.

Why do I need the TZO Dynamic DNS with my VPN and how do I set it all up?

A VPN can work on any type of IP address, but most manufacturers and installers will always suggest a STATIC IP address - which means the IP address never changes. Due to the fact that many of these VPN's are installed on Internet connections using Cable or DSL - it's very difficult and expensive to obtain a static IP address - sometimes impossible.

TZO.COM DDNS (Dynamic DNS) is the simple solution to this common problem. The TZO DDNS provides you with a domain name to use with your Dynamic IP address - we also work on static IP's. TZO software tracks your IP address changes and updates the domain name immediately, allowing you and your users to connect to the VPN using this domain name instead of an IP address

Here are some quick steps on how to best use TZO with your VPN setup:

1) Get your VPN server software installed, running and configured for your VPN users. If you are using a VPN router, setup the router and VPN tunnels according to the install guide.

2) Configure your VPN client software at the remote location and attempt to connect to your VPN "server" or endpoint using the WAN IP address at the "server" location. This makes sure that the VPN works properly using IP only

3) Once you can connect to your VPN from the Internet using the IP address, you should go to the TZO Website to download and install the TZO software anywhere on the same network as the VPN server itself. If you do not have a PC or Server that can run the TZO software on the same network, you can use a router or VPN router that includes the TZO DDNS software such as some Linksys, Netgear, SMC, D-Link routers or other TZO certified devices on our list.

5) Once you get TZO DDNS setup with your TZO domain name you selected, you can then use this domain name to connect to your VPN instead of the IP address. It's very important that if you are running the TZO software, that you keep the software running at all times. If you use a TZO compatible router, the router will update the domain name when the IP changes on the router.

Thats it! Its as simple as using the TZO DOMAIN NAME (Example: YourVPN.tzo.com) to connect to the VPN server remotely instead of using an IP address that's always changing. The TZO domain name NEVER changes, and you will always continue to use the same domain name whenever you or your clients want to connect to the VPN

Tip: Keep in mind that SOME VPN Servers and Clients require connections using an IP address. Don't worry, TZO will still work for you! When you need to connect, just PING the TZO Domain name, get the current IP address, and put that IP address into the VPN client to connect.
