What is an IP
Camera and can it help protect my home or
business? |
|
|
|
|
|
An
IP Camera is a webcam that can be networked via a
wired or wireless network for remote viewing and
surveillance. One or several IP cameras can be
installed at your home or business to provide
complete coverage and to provide a watchful eye on
your employees. An IP camera typically includes a
web server built directly into the camera - which
means it can be directly connected to a cable or
DSL modem with no other software or hardware
required.
The IP Camera or camera system is typically
supplied and installed by many security companies
and can be installed along with an Internet
connection for remote viewing. Viewing the cameras
remotely can provide extra security to your home or
business, and help protect losses from theft or
vandalism. IP camera's are mostly used to help
protect many restaurants, vacation or resort homes,
retail or fast food shops, and construction sites.
No matter what type of home or business you want to
protect, an IP camera is a wise investment that can
help protect you and your property.

How do I
purchase and setup an IP Camera? |
|
|
|
|
|
The first
step is to purchase a camera from your local
computer store, or work with your local security
company or contact a company that specializes in IP
camera's and remote access such as Stardot, D-Link, Veo,
Axis and many others. Any one of
these companies can help guide you to a camera or
camera system that is appropriate for your needs.
Work with the installer or salesperson to set up
the IP camera according to the instructions, and
make sure it works on the internal network, and
remotely using the current Internet IP address to
make sure it's all setup and working properly using
just an IP to connect. Once the IP Camera is
installed and configured properly, the next step is
to install the TZO software somewhere on the same
network as the IP Camera, or you can install the
TZO DDNS service in the router. See below for
complete steps on getting TZO to work with your IP
Cameras.

Why do I need
the TZO Dynamic DNS with my IP Camera and how do I
set it all up? |
| |
|
| |
An IP camera
or IP camera system can work on any type of IP
address, but most manufacturers and installers will
suggest a STATIC IP address - which means the IP
address never changes. Due to the fact that many of
these IP Cams are installed on Internet connections
using Cable or DSL - it's very difficult and
expensive to obtain a static IP address - sometimes
impossible.
TZO.COM DDNS (Dynamic DNS) is the simple solution to
this common problem. The TZO DDNS provides you with a
domain name to use with your Dynamic IP address - we
also work on static IP's. TZO software tracks your IP
address changes and updates the domain name
immediately, allowing you and your users to connect
to and view the IP camera using this domain name
instead of an IP address
Here are some quick steps on how to best use
TZO with your IP Camera setup:
1) Get your IP Camera
installed and running internally (inside
your network) and make sure the IP Camera is working
according to the install guide and that you can view
the camera.
2) You should now get your
IP camera connected to your network and make
sure the network is connected to your cablemodem or
DSL modem.
3) Configure your router or
firewall to open the proper ports (if you
use one) in order to connect to your IP Camera using
the current IP address of the router. Most IP
Camera's have a built in web server that listens on
port 80 - so you should forward port 80 to the LAN IP
address of your IP Camera or Camera system.
4) Once you can connect to
your IP Camera from the Internet using the routers IP
address, you should go to the TZO Website to
download and install the TZO software on
any PC attached to the same network. If you
do not have a PC or Server that can run the TZO
software on the network, you can use a router or
firewall that includes the TZO DDNS software such as
some Linksys, NetGear, SMC, D-Link or other devices
on our list. If you have an IP camera from D-Link,
Stardot and many others, the camera may include a TZO
DDNS option within the camera. In most cases, this
DDNS option can be enabled in the camera and the TZO
software won't need to be installed.
5) Once you get TZO DDNS setup with
your TZO domain name you selected, you can
then use this domain name to connect and view the IP
camera from the Internet. It's very
important that if you are running the TZO software,
that you keep the software running at all times. If
you use a TZO compatible router, the router will
update the domain name when the IP changes on the
router.
That's it! Its as simple as using the TZO DOMAIN NAME
(Example: YourIPCamera.tzo.com) to connect to the IP
Camera remotely instead of using an IP address that's
always changing. The TZO domain name NEVER changes,
and you will always continue to use the same domain
name whenever you or your clients want to connect to
the camera at that location.
