Quick Start to Using TZO with your Snapgear VPN Firewall router

Many TZO users want to run their own web server with multiple web sites on their home server. Using Microsoft IIS can be a big issue with worms and viruses, and sometimes the TZO Windows web server can't perform some of the advanced tasks that Apache can.

This is a quick guide to using the TZO Dynamic DNS Service capability within your router. This tutorial will guide you step by step on how to set up a TZO account and use the Dynamic DNS services from TZO within the Snapgear firewall appliance.

Snapgear VPN firewall appliances and routers such as the SME 530 and SME 550 have the latest integrated TZO capability if your router has a firmware version after 1.8.2 - July 2003. If your router has the new firmware, You should see a TZO logo under the DDNS section of the router. (See an example in the screenshots below)

If you do not see the TZO Dynamic DNS capability within your router, please see the Snapgear website below for more information and a newer firmware version for your router.

You should first setup the router for your network. Follow the quick start manual or use the included Snapgear CD setup wizard to get you started. Once the router is setup and functioning, you should enter the main administration screen of your router.

To do this, (assuming your router is using default DHCP schema of 192.168.0.1) go to http://192.168.0.1 in your local browser and once you validate the username and password to enter the router administration, click on the IP CONFIGURATION link on the menu to the left, then click on ADVANCED IP CONFIGURATION button (labeled CONFIGURE) down at the bottom of the IP CONFIGURATION screen. The DDNS configuration is under the ADVANCED IP configuration screen as shown in the screenshot below:

In order to enable the Dynamic DNS, you first need to sign up for an account at TZO.COM. If you already have a TZO.COM Dynamic DNS account, continue to Step 3 below.

  1) Click on the TZO LOGO as shown above in the ADVANCED IP CONFIGURATION or go to http://snapgear.tzo.com in your browser. This will allow you to sign up for a free account. Once you are presented with a menu, select TRY TZO FOR FREE at the top of the web page. You will then see the screenshot below:

  Snapgear DDNS setup
The TZO free trial signup screen at snapgear.tzo.com (click to enlarge)

  2) In order to sign up with a TZO trial account for your Snapgear router, enter in your choice for a trial domain, and your email address and click the CREATE MY FREE TRIAL DOMAIN NAME button as shown above. This will send you an email with a trial key. You can then use this domain name, key and email address information within the router as shown in the screenshot below:

  Snapgear DDNS setup
The TZO DDNS configuration screen under IP CONFIGURATION / ADVANCED IP (click to enlarge)

  3) Once you have entered the TZO account information from your trial email as shown in the screenshot above, you need to click the APPLY button in the lower left corner.
You should now see that the router has updated the DDNS sucessfully. If the IP address changes on the WAN port of the router, this will be done automatically. You should now check to make sure your domain is logged on to the proper address in the TZO Dynamic DNS servers. You can test this by trying a PING test at http://Help.TZO.Com - The Ping should respond back to your IP address. You can also see your account settings and current IP address in the TZO Control Panel at https://www.tzo.com

Now that you have the TZO Dynamic DNS set up in your Snapgear router, you should start using your Domain name by running some sort of server. You can run almost any type of server behind the Snapgear router. You should start by clicking on the INCOMING ACCESS under the FIREWALL section of the menu as shown in the screenshot below. Scroll down until you see the PORT FORWARDING section of the INCOMING ACCESS section of admin interface. It will look similar to the screenshot below:

  Snapgear DDNS setup

Once you enter the PORT FORWARDING section as show above, you should select which servers you want to host. In this example, we show you how to forward ports to host an SMTP mail server.

You should enter in the Incoming and target port (UDP or TCP) for each service you wish to host on your servers as shown in the screenshot above. You should enter in the LAN IP ADDRESS for each server you wish to forward that port to. In this case, our server is a Windows XP Pro server, running an SMTP server on port 25. The Windows XP server is set to a STATIC IP address of 192.168.0.2 on our internal LAN, so we enter that IP address in the TARGET SERVER field since that is our main server IP where we want to host this SMTP mail service or server. The Incoming and Target port is set to 25, and the Incoming Interface is our WAN port. Click the ADD button to add this service to the firewall incoming access rules.

You can enable other services by using the ADD button to add the services to the incoming access list. Once you do this you are ready to start hosting! Install and configure your servers, and you are on your way to hosting your own web, email, ftp, and VPN server on the Internet!

That's it! You can enable and disable ports as you add or remove servers. Running your own mail server, ftp server, and web server can offer you many benefits, and save you money by doing your own web hosting. If you have any problems with this tutorial with the TZO service, please see the TZO FAQ, as part of the SUPPORT section of this web site. You can also see the Snapgear website for more information on the Snapgear routers.
