A
Slingbox is a unique server device that allows you
to remotely view your TV from anywhere in the world
using a broadband connection. If you use a DVR such
as TIVO or other DVR supplied by your cable
company, you can even remotely play and schedule
recordings from anywhere!
Using a Slingbox with your cable or DSL connection
is simple and easy, but can be a hassle if you have
a Dynamic IP address. Since most cable or DSL ISP's
provide only Dynamic IP addresses (Constantly
changing) - connecting to your Slingbox remotely
can be tricky. This is where using TZO Dynamic DNS
comes to the rescue!
What would you rather remember to connect to your
SlingBox remotely???
A domain name like YourSlingbox.tzo.com or a long
hard-to-remember 36 digit Slingmedia Finder ID such
as AX5432-X6CV-CBV4452-DHF5747-G753
A TZO Domain Name is MUCH EASIER to
remember than the assigned Slingbox Finder
ID!

To Get Started: To use
TZO with your Slingbox, you first must get the
Slingbox setup according to the directions and be
sure to forward TCP port 5001 to the internal LAN
IP address of your Slingbox.
Once you have setup the
Slingbox on your network, you should test it using
your IP address. This means the Slingbox works
INTERNALLY, but if you did not forward port 5001
correctly, it may not work from outside of your
network (over the Internet)
To make sure the Slingbox is ready for TZO DDNS,
you should make sure it works over the Internet.
This means you should leave the location that the
slingbox is located at, and try to connect to your
Slingbox using the Slingmedia FINDER ID to or WAN
IP address connect. If you can connect using your
Slingbox Finder ID or WAN IP address, then this
assures the Slingbox is setup properly. You can
then follow the steps below to use TZO Dynamic DNS
to connect to your Slingbox:
|
| |
1) Be sure to first
signup with a 30 day TZO trial if you do not
already have an account: You have 2
choices when running TZO. You can enable the TZO
DDNS in your router as long as it's on our
certified LIST
of routers, or if you have a PC or Server that
remains up and running at all times at the same
location where your slingbox is located, you can
install and run the TZO software
on that PC or Server. Once you setup TZO you can
choose a name like YourSlingbox.tzo.com,
YourName.tzo.com, etc - this is your unique TZO
domain name that will be used in the SlingPlayer to
connect when you are away from your home.
2) Once you have TZO installed in
your router or on your server, you can then setup
the Slingmedia player with Dynamic DNS instead of
using the Slingfinder ID or IP address.
To use the TZO
Dynamic DNS domain name we need to add a shortcut
into the SlingPlayer. Run the Slingplayer
by clicking on the Desktop Icon as shown
below:

3) When the SlingPlayer loads, you
can setup a shortcut to view your Slingbox. To add
a quick shortcut to your Slingbox, click
the ADD NEW SLINGBOX button as shown in
the screenshot below:

4)
Once you click the ADD NEW SLINGBOX
button you will see a screenshot as shown
below. This is where you enter in the TZO Domain
name you selected for your Slingbox. Fill in the
name of your slingbox (whatever you wish to call
it) in the ALIAS field. Then Fill in your PASSWORD
in the password field, and lastly, click the
checkbox under the DIRECT CONNECTION as shown
below. You should then enter in the TZO Domain name
you selected. In this case, our domain name is
YOURNAME.TZO.COM. You should enter in the unique
domain name you selected with TZO. For most users
you should not have to change the port from 5001 -
this is the default Slingbox port. Once you have
entered in your information, click the OK button to
save the entry.

5) Now that you have added your
shortcut to your Slingbox using your TZO Domain
name, you can now connect easily without having to
ever remember an IP address or SlingFinder ID. Just
Click on the SHORTCUT as shown below and you will
connect instantly to your Slingbox to enjoy your
favorite TV shows and moveis - all over the
Internet!

If you have other questions about the Slingbox and
how you can enjoy TV and Movies when you are away
from home, please see the SlingMedia website.
