Quick
Start to using TZO with your SMC
Router
|
| |
This
is a quick guide to using the TZO Dynamic DNS Service
capability within your SMC router. This describes how
to set up a TZO account and use the Dynamic DNS
services from TZO within the
router. |
| |
|
| |
Many
newer SMC routers such as the SMC 7004VWBR and
SMC7004WFW wireless broadband gateways and many other
models should have the TZO capability if your router
has a firmware dated after September, 2002. If your
SMC router has the new firmware, You should see a TZO
option under the DDNS section of the router. (See the
screenshots below) |
| |
|
| |
If
you do not see the TZO Dynamic DNS capability within
your router, please see the SMC website below for
more information and a newer firmware version for
your router. Some SMC models may not support the TZO
DDNS, for more information, contact SMC support or
visit the SMC website at www.SMC.com |
| |
|
| |
You
should first enter the main administration screen of
your router, and once you validate the username and
password to enter the router administration, click on
the ADVANCED SETUP as shown circled in RED in the
screenshot below: |

7004WFW router (click to enlarge) |

| |
In
order to enable the Dynamic DNS, you first need to
sign up for an account at TZO.COM. If you already
have a TZO.COM Dynamic DNS account, continue to the
next step. |
| |
|
| |
 |

|
| |
The DDNS (Dynamic DNS) screen of
the SMC router (click to enlarge) |
| |
|
| |
1) Click on the ENABLE radio
button in the DDNS field to enable the TZO
functionality as shown in the screenshot
above |
| |
|
| |
2a) If you already have a TZO
Account, you can put in your TZO Domain Name
(Standard or Premiere) Email and TZO Key information
into the interface shown above, and click the SAVE
button at the bottom left of the screen (Not shown in
the screenshot) |
| |
|
| |
2b) If you do not have a TZO
account, you can sign up for a Free 30 Day Trial,
with no obligations, and no restrictions. To sign up
with a free trial, go to http://smc.tzo.com |
| |
|
| |
Simply enter your email address, and the domain
name you want to use, and this will send you an email
along with a TZO trial key. You can then use this
domain name, key and email address information within
the router. |
| |
|
| |
3) Once you have entered the TZO
account information as shown in the screenshot above,
you need to click the APPLY button in the lower right
corner as shown. |
| |
|
| |
You
should now have to reboot the router, and this will
be done automatically. It may take a minute or two to
come back online. Once the router reboots, TZO should
then update the WAN IP address of the router to our
TZO DDNS Servers. |
| |
|
| |
You
should now check to make sure your domain is logged
on to the proper address in the TZO Dynamic DNS
servers. You can test this by trying a PING test at
http://Help.TZO.Com - The Ping
should respond back to your IP address. You can also
see your account settings and current IP address in
the TZO Control Panel at https://www.tzo.com |
| |
|
| |
Now
that you have the TZO Dynamic DNS set up in your SMC
router, you should start using your Domain name by
running some sort of server. You can run almost any
type of server behind the SMC router. You should
start by clicking on the ADVANCED link from the main
screen, and then you will see the VIRTUAL SERVERS
link as shown below in the lower left. Once you enter
the VIRTUAL SERVERS section of the router, the
interface will look similar to the screenshot
below: |
| |
|
| |
 |
| |
|
| |
Once
you enter the VIRTUAL SERVERS administration screen,
you should select which servers you want to host. In
this example, we show you how to forward ports to
host a Web Server, SMTP and FTP Server. |
| |
|
| |
You
should enter in the IP, port and TCP or UDP for each
service you wish to host on your servers as shown in
the screenshot above. You should enter in the LAN IP
ADDRESS for each server you wish to forward that port
to. In this case, our server is an Windows XP Pro
server, running all the above services. The Windows
XP server is set to a STATIC IP address of
192.168.2.1 on our internal LAN, so we enter that IP
address since that is our main server IP where we
want to host these "services" or servers. |
| |
|
| |
Once
you enable all the services and set the LAN IP
addresses, click the APPLY button in the bottom right
corner and you are ready to start hosting! Install
and configure your servers, and you are on your way
to hosting your own web, email, ftp, and VPN server
on the Internet! |
| |
|
| |
That's it! You can enable and disable ports as
you add or remove servers. Running your own mail
server, ftp server, and web server can offer you many
benefits, and save you money by doing your own web
hosting. If you have any problems with this tutorial
with the TZO service, please see the TZO FAQ, as part
of the SUPPORT section of this web site. You can also
see the SMC website for more information on the SMC
routers. |
| |
|
| |
*
Please Note, that if your router supports UPnP and
you are using Windows XP with UPnP enabled, and your
application is UpNp enabled, some ports may open
automatically on your router. For more information
about UPnP capabilities, and compatible software,
please contact SMC support at http://www.smc.com |
