Using TZO to run your own Palace Chat Server

This tutorial shows you how to set up the popular Palace chat server using TZO. It also has a section on connecting to a Palace chat server that is running TZO. A free version of the Palace chat server and Palace chat client can be downloaded at http://www.thePalace.com

TZO allows any user to run a Palace chat server using a true Internet Domain Name, instead of an ever-changing Dynamic IP address. Whenever someone wants to connect to your Palace server, you simple give them your TZO Domain Name, such as yourname.tzo.net

This tutorial assumes that you already have downloaded and installed the TZO Software. This also assumes that you have already chosen a TZO Domain Name for your server

Download and Setup the Palace Chat Server. You will see some screenshots below showing the setup of the Palace Chat Server. The Palace Chat Server installs to a \PalaceServer directory.

Once you start the Palace Server setup, you will see the screen below. Pick any name you wish for your Palace server.

You will then see the screen below. You need to define a set of rooms for your Palace.

Once you Define the number of rooms, the layout, you need to select the BACKDROP for each room. There are sample backgrounds under the Palace server\SampleRooms directory server\SampleRooms directory

After selecting your Backdrops, you can select the door location of your room (Not shown) and then select your SCRIPTS that will be used for your Rooms. An example of the scripts are below. In this example, I chose to set up 3 rooms, each with a unique script. The Selection below shows the MOSH PIT as a script that is currently selected for that room. Repeat this process until you have selected a script for each room. Then Click the FINISH button to complete your Palace.

Once you have selected the room layout, the backdrops and scripts, it's time to launch your server. Follow the directions below by choosing The Palace from the Start Menu.

Once you start the Server, you will see the Screen Below, which shows your Server Name as well as your IP Address. This name MAY be different than your TZO Domain Name. DON'T WORRY - this name is your NetBios name, and has nothing to do with your domain name with TZO.

Once you start the Server, and you see the Screen above, your Server is ready for Visitors! Tell your friends to connect to your Palace by using your TZO Domain Name. See the section below on connecting to your Palace server using the Palace chat client.

Connecting to your Palace Chat Server

You do NOT need TZO to connect to a server. TZO just makes it easier when connecting to a server by using a domain name instead of an IP address.

Download and install the Palace chat client from the Palace website listed at the top of this tutorial. You also need to know the TZO Domain Name of the server that you are connecting to. In this example, I am connecting to a Palace by the name of MyOwnPalace.tzo.com

When you launch the Palace client, you will see the screen below, asking you for a Chat Name to use. Enter your name here, or a handle to use while chatting.

Once you Click OK, you will see the screen below. This is the main Palace client windows. Notice that a Log window also pop's up. You can ignore the Log Window for now, and focus on the screenshot below

Click on FILE, CONNECT TO A Palace

This brings up the screenshot below. This is the connection window, and where you enter in the TZO Domain Name of the Palace Server that you want to connect to. Enter the Palace Domain Name (MyPalaceServer.Tzo.com, etc.), and you will connect instantly!

That's it! Connecting to a Palace Chat Server with a Name is MUCH easier and faster than remembering and connecting with an IP address. Have fun chatting.
