Using TZO DDNS with the HP Media Vault Line of Home Servers

TZO Dynamic DNS services are bundled along with each HP Media Vault home server. When you purchase an HP Media Vault or Media Vault home server, you can choose from a free year of the TZO Dynamic DNS Services using a branded HP domain name. At the time of this writing, HP does not include the TZO Custom domain names, but you can still use a custom domain name with your HP Media Vault, you just need to contact TZO Support to place the order for the custom domain. By ordering a TZO custom domain name you can select to use your own custom domain name such as YourName.com

IMPORTANT NOTE: This tutorial assumes you have gone through the initial setup of the HP Media Vault home server and are ready to setup the Remote Access portion of the server. You should have already proceeded with the HP Media Vault Home Server software install and have added your users.

SECURITY WARNING: Before setting up remote access you should enable an administrator password. These first few steps are CRITICAL - If you do not setup an administrator password and you enable remote access, ANYONE can come into the device and setup users and take control of your Media Vault server! If you have already setup an administrator password, please skip down to the remote access instructions. For more information on setting up the administrator username and password, please see the manual for the HP Media Vault.

STEP 1) Once you completed the initial setup of the Media Vault and have installed all the software you are ready to launch the HP Media Vault Control Center as shown in the screenshot below. In order to launch the HP Media Vault Control Center, right click on the Media Vault Icon in the system tray as shown circled in red below, or double click on the Media Vault icon on your desktop as shown below. Either of these methods will launch the HP Media Vault Control Center so you can setup the administrator username and password and finally enable remote access.

STEP 9) Once you click on the SET UP WEB ADDRESS button you will be launched into the domain name selection screen. Do the following to setup a domain name on your HP Media Vault:

- Make sure ENABLE WEB ADDRESS is checked ON

- Select a domain name from the Personal Domain name area. In this case, we selected YOURNAME as the subdomain and selected HPHomeServer.com as the domain name. This makes our server have the domain name of YOURNAME.HPHomeServer.com - this is the domain name we will use for remote access.

- Enter your account information below including your email address. This information is required for TZO to contact you if there are any problems with your account or if your account is going to expire. Input your First and Last name as well as your Email Address and click next to continue. **Your security and privacy is important to us, TZO does NOT sell or provide your contact information to anyone. **

- If you wish to get access to your files remotely, check the "Enable Internet file browsing"
This feature allows viewing and accessing files stored in shared folders from the Internet with a web browser. ** It's important that you set strong/secure passwords to protect your files. If you do not wish to have browsing access to your files and shared folders you can make sure this feature is UNCHECKED. **

Click SAVE in the lower right as shown circled in the screenshot shown below. This will save the information and you will see a popup screen that explains this information will be sent to TZO.COM to setup your HP Personal domain.

STEP 10) Once you setup the remote access domain name and enable the Web Address, your Remote access screen will refresh and you will see the domain name setup as shown below circled in red. The next step is to setup the router, click SET UP ROUTER as shown circled in red below.

STEP 11) Once you click the SET UP ROUTER button, you will see the screenshot shown below. You have 2 choices when it comes to setting up the router. If you are a novice user, select AUTOMATICALLY SET UP ROUTER as shown circled in the screenshot shown below.

If you are an advanced user and wish to setup the port forwarding manually in your router, click MANUALLY SET UP ROUTER and the required details for port forwarding will be displayed on the screen. If you setup the router manually, we highly urge you to also setup a Static LAN IP address on your Media Vault for the best performance and to ensure the IP of the Media Vault will not change on the local LAN.

If you have selected to AUTOMATICALLY SET UP ROUTER please be patient. The router configuration may take a few minutes, and once sucessfully configured, a dialog box will pop up with the status of the router configuration.

STEP 12) Once your router is setup, it's time to test everything to make sure you can get remote access to your Media Vault when you are away. In many cases, the domain name will NOT WORK internally - this is normal.

In order to test the remote access properly and get the HP Photo Webshare to enable, you MUST leave that location where the Media Vault resides and test from an external location. If your MediaSmart is at home, go to work or a friends house and test using your domain name.

Once you have your domain name working you can then access all the features and functions of the Media Vault when you are away. For details on using the features and functions of the HP Media Vault, please see the documentation that came with your server.

Purchasing TZO Services:

Click RENEW PERSONAL DOMAIN from within the STATUS screen at anytime to order your domain name.

Before your service expires TZO will email you about your upcoming expiration of TZO service. Within the email you can click the reorder link or you can use the RENEW PERSONAL DOMAIN link from within the STATUS screen of the Media Vault server.

Private domains: At the time of this writing, HP does not include the TZO Custom domain names, but you can still use a custom domain name with your HP Media Vault, you just need to contact TZO Support to place the order for the custom domain. By ordering a TZO custom domain name you can select to use your own custom domain name such as YourName.com. Be sure that before you do this you have a Hp Personal Domain name setup so TZO can "link" your new private domain name with the HP Personal Domain name running in the Media Vault.

Expiration of your TZO DDNS account: Before your service expires TZO will email you about your upcoming expiration of TZO service. Within the email you can click the reorder link or you can use the RENEW PERSONAL DOMAIN link from within the STATUS screen of the Media Vault server.

Troubleshooting and tips and tricks section below:

- Don't use the TZO Control Panel to change your Domain Name.
If you need to change your domain name and are using an HP Personal domain, use the Windows Home Server Console and go into remote access. In the Remote access area, select SET UP WEB ADDRESS and enter in a new domain name of your choice.

- Getting an error when attempting to go to the HP Photo Webshare?
In order to enable the HP Photo Webshare, you MUST leave that location where the Media Vault resides and test from an external location. Once the Media Vault server gets a "hit" from a remote location it unlocks the HP Photo Webshare.

- Having Trouble connecting remotely to your HP Media Vault Home Server?
In some cases, your server may move from one DHCP address to another on you internal network if you have not set a Static LAN IP on the server. If this happens, there could be an issue where the remote access router configuration could fail and won't remap the ports. There are a few things you can try that will typically solve this issue. First off, you can try and reboot your Media Vault server. If this won't work, you can try the Automatic router setup again, or use the Manual port forwarding option.

- Domain Name Issues when connecting to your server?
In some cases, you may not be able to use the domain name internally. This is due to "loopback" issues on some routers. If you have trouble reaching your server when using the domain name from inside your network, use the INTERNAL LAN IP Address of your MediaSmart Server. You and others can continue to use the domain name when you are away from the server location.
