Using TZO DDNS with your HP MediaSmart Server

TZO Dynamic DNS services are bundled along with each HP MediaSmart server. When you purchase an HP MediaSmart server, you can choose from a free year of the TZO Dynamic DNS Services using a branded HP domain name, or you can select to use the TZO Custom Dynamic DNS service and use your own custom domain name such as YourName.com

IMPORTANT NOTE: This tutorial assumes you have gone through the initial install of the HP MediaSmart server and are ready to finalize the configuration of the server. You should have already proceeded with the HP MediaSmart software update and added your users.

STEP 1) When you first complete the setup, the HP MediaSmart administration console loads as shown in the screenshot below. This screenshot shows the initial Suggested Configuration Steps dialog box that pops up the first time you run the Windows Home Server Console. In order to setup the TZO DDNS and enable remote access, you need to click on the CONFIGURE button in the bottom right of the screen as shown below.

STEP 2) Once you click on the CONFIGURE under REMOTE ACCESS, you will see the screenshot shown below. In order to share photos with friends and family, you should TURN ON WEB SITE CONNECTIVITY . Click the TURN ON button under WEB SITE CONNECTIVITY to enable external website connectivity.

STEP 3) Next, you should configure the router. Under the ROUTER section, click SETUP to configure the automatic configuration of your router and you will see the screenshot shown below.

STEP 4) Once you configure the router, it’s time to setup the DOMAIN NAME for remote access use. When setting up the domain name, you have 2 options when choosing to use TZO. Select the option that’s best for you

Domain Name Option 1) Use TZO.COM Dynamic DNS FREE DDNS service for 1 year under a Branded HP domain name such as Yourname.HPShare.net. There are several HP branded domain names to choose from. This is the default setting and is free for 1 year.

Domain Name Option 2) Use TZO.COM Dynamic DNS with a CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME service for 1 year. Run your HP MediaSmart server with you OWN PERSONAL domain name! This option allows you to register YOUR OWN CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME such as TheSmithFamily.net, Your-Own-Company.com, etc. This service is a paid service for a nominal fee yet allows a highly customized domain name for your HP MediaSmart server.

STEP 5) Once you select the HP Personal Domain Name option, you will see the screenshot below. Click NEXT to Continue.

Please Note: This step shows how to use option 1, the free HP Personal Domain Name by TZO.COM. If you choose option 2 and wish to use your own custom domain name, TZO.COM can register a domain name for you, or you can transfer a domain name you already own to TZO. The setup process is nearly identical and this tutorial can be used as a guide for option 2. The main difference being the domain name, registration and credit card details.

STEP 6) You are now asked to input your Contact information as shown below. This information is required for TZO to contact you if there are any problems with your account of if your account is going to expire. Input your First and Last name as well as your Email Address and click next to continue. **Your security and privacy is important to us, TZO does NOT sell or provide your contact information to anyone..

STEP 7) You are now asked to input your choice for a domain name as shown in the screenshot below. Select a domain name that fits best for you or your business and click Next. If you do not find a domain name that you prefer, you can cancel and restart the Domain Name selection and choose TZO CUSTOM DOMAIN name for your own personal domain name selection.

STEP 8) You are shown your domain name summary as shown in the screenshot below. Check that the domain name is correct and click Finish.

STEP 9) You will now see the Windows Home Server Settings Screen as shown below. This shows that Web Site Connectivity is Enabled, the ROUTER is configured and working properly, and the Domain Name with TZO is setup and configured for simple PhotoSharing as well as secure remote control and remote access to your HP MediaSmart server.

STEP 10) You will now see the final confirmation screen detailing the TZO Dynamic DNS setup. Please note your domain name you select. You can use this domain name when connecting remotely or when sharing photos with you. The TZO Dynamic DNS will continually monitor your IP address and synchronize the domain name instantly. This means you will always be able to access your HP MediaSmart server and your friends and family can connect to view your Photos. Click OK to continue setting up your HP MediaSmart server, the Dynamic DNS services are all setup and you can enjoy remote access, control and photosharing with your TZO.COM domain name.

That’s It!

You can now access your MediaSmart server using your domain name when you are away from the server location. If you have trouble reaching your server when using the domain name from inside your network, use the INTERNAL LAN IP Address of your MediaSmart Server.

Troubleshooting and tips and tricks section below:

- Don't use the TZO Control Panel to change your Domain Name. If you need to change your domain name and are using an HP Personal domain, use the Windows Home Server Console and go into remote access. In the Domain Name area, select UNCONFIGURE and select a new domain. For those with Custom domains, please call or Email TZO Support for change requests.

- Having Trouble connecting remotely to your HP MediaSmart Server?
In some cases, your server may move from one DHCP address to another on you internal network if you have not set a Static LAN IP on the server. If this happens, there could be an issue where the remote access router configuration could fail and won't remap the ports. There are a few things you can try that will typically solve this issue. First off, you can try and reboot your MediaSmart server. If this won't work, you can use the Windows Home Server console to access the Remote Access/Router section. Clicking UNCONFIGURE will remove the port forwarding, and then clicking SETUP will re-do the port forwarding and should solve the problem.

- Domain Name Issues when connecting to your server?
In some cases, you may not be able to use the domain name internally. This is due to "loopback" issues on some routers. If you have trouble reaching your server when using the domain name from inside your network, use the INTERNAL LAN IP Address of your MediaSmart Server. You and others can continue to use the domain name when you are away from the server location.

- Security Warning when you connect to your server?
This is due to the HTTPS protocol and not having a certificate that matches the domain name. You can send your webshare visitors to http://www.YourDomainName.HPShare.net (or whatever HP name you selected) and they will not get this warning. You can also disable the SSL forwarding by unchecking the SSL forwarding. To disable SSL, go to the Windows Home Server console. Click modify on remote access, and under Domain Name, click details. This will give you the option is disable SSL web forwarding. (Not recommended).

- Having trouble using Remote Desktop to get into the MediaSmart Server?
WARNING: IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE STRONG PASSWORDS!
By default the Windows Firewall blocks any remote desktop attempt from outside the local area network. If you wish to use the MediaSmart Server as the “hub” for your remote desktop needs, you must change the Windows Firewall settings. Login as Administrator to the Windows Home Server via Remote Desktop, Go to the Windows Control Panel, select Windows Firewall. Click the Exceptions Tab, Select REMOTE DESKTOP, click Edit, then CHANGE SCOPE. Selecting ANY COMPUTER will allow remote desktop connections over the Internet.

- Having trouble using the TZO Dynamic DNS for Remote Desktop or other activities outside of Web Access? By default when secure connections are select, the TZO DDNS forwards all subdomains of the domain name to the secure URL. If you wish to use the TZO DDNS with other applications such as remote desktop, connect to the domain name with the www subdomain. Example: www.Yourname.GotoMyHP.com or www.Yourname.HPShare.net, or if you use a private domain, use www.YourFamilyDomain.com. You can also disable the SSL forwarding by unchecking the SSL forwarding. To disable SSL, go to the Windows Home Server console. Click modify on remote access, and under Domain Name, click details. This will give you the option is disable SSL web forwarding. (Not recommended)
