SSL Certificate Information/Security Information:

Adding an SSL Certificate using a TZO Custom Domain Name:
SSL Certificates can be purchased and applied when using a HP Custom Domain. If you are interested in obtaining an SSL certificate for your home server using your own custom domain name this is possible with the HP MediaSmart server. In order to do this, you need to select HP CUSTOM DOMAIN name from the Remote access/Domain name area. Once you do this, follow the instructions with TZO and get the private domain name working. Once you have it working properly with the HP MediaSmart home server, you can then follow the Custom Domain SSL Certificate tutorial at http://www.MyHomeServer.com

1st Generation MediaSmart Servers - EX470/EX475:
Older MediaSmart Servers can now download the HP Update V1.3 R1 that includes the FREE 5-Year multilevel 128-Bit SSL Certificate powered by Comodo. See the details below for more information on the SSL Certificate that is supplied with this update. If you already are using a HP Personal domain and download this update, you should perform an UNCONFIGURE of the domain in Remote Access and then simply step through the HP Personal Domain selections again. The data will all be saved and you'll just need to hit NEXT at each screen. This will bring down the new certificate when this is completed. Please note that it takes about 30 seconds after the final NEXT/OK to install the certificate. If you attempt to load your browser with the domain name during this process, you may get a security warning. Please wait 1 min before attempting to connect to your server via SSL. You can add your own Custom Private Domain name with TZO and add in an SSL Certificate if you require a confirmed SSL Connection.

2nd Generation MediaSmart Servers - EX485/EX487:
The newer MediaSmart Servers come with a FREE 5-Year multilevel 128-Bit SSL Certificate powered by Comodo. The screenshot shown below details the multilevel domain names that Comodo and TZO provide for the HP Personal Domain Solution. If you wish, you can add your own Custom Private Domain name with TZO and add in an SSL Certificate if you require a confirmed SSL Connection.

The CN (Common Name) names listed below show the domains and network names you can use to connect securely once you signup with an HP Personal Domain Name. The Certificate is automatically installed via a Secure connection with TZO and Comodo and it done at the time of remote access domain configuration. Once you have this certificate installed it means secure connections both INTERNALLY and REMOTELY!

Domains and Network Names offered in the Comodo Certificate provided FREE:

\\LOCALHOST - (When connecting on the server itself)

\\HPSERVER - (this is the default NetBios Name of the newer MediaSmart servers)

YourDomain.__AnHPOfferedDomain______.com

www.YourDomain.__AnHPOfferedDomain______.com

(Please note in the example above, Your domain name will be different)

Troubleshooting and tips and tricks:

- Don't use the TZO Control Panel to change your Domain Name. If you need to change your domain name and are using an HP Personal domain, use the Windows Home Server Console and go into remote access. In the Domain Name area, select UNCONFIGURE and select a new domain. For those with Custom domains, please call or Email TZO Support for change requests.

- Having Trouble connecting remotely to your HP MediaSmart Server?
In some cases, your server may move from one DHCP address to another on you internal network if you have not set a Static LAN IP on the server. If this happens, there could be an issue where the remote access router configuration could fail and won't remap the ports. There are a few things you can try that will typically solve this issue. First off, you can try and reboot your MediaSmart server. If this won't work, you can use the Windows Home Server console to access the Remote Access/Router section. Clicking UNCONFIGURE will remove the port forwarding, and then clicking SETUP will re-do the port forwarding and should solve the problem.

- Domain Name Issues when connecting to your server?
In some cases, you may not be able to use the domain name internally. This is due to "loopback" issues on some routers. If you have trouble reaching your server when using the domain name from inside your network, use the INTERNAL LAN IP Address of your MediaSmart Server or the \\NetworkName of your server. You and others can continue to use the domain name when you are away from the server location.

- Having trouble using Remote Desktop to get into the MediaSmart Server remotely?
WARNING: IF YOU CHOOSE TO DO THIS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE STRONG PASSWORDS!
By default the Windows Firewall blocks any remote desktop attempt from outside the local area network. If you wish to use the MediaSmart Server as the “hub” for your remote desktop needs, you must change the Windows Firewall settings. Login as Administrator to the Windows Home Server via Remote Desktop, Go to the Windows Control Panel, select Windows Firewall. Click the Exceptions Tab, Select REMOTE DESKTOP, click Edit, then CHANGE SCOPE. Selecting ANY COMPUTER will allow remote desktop connections over the Internet.

- Having trouble using the TZO Dynamic DNS for Remote Desktop or other activities outside of Web Access? By default when secure connections are select, the TZO DDNS forwards all subdomains of the domain name to the secure URL. If you wish to use the TZO DDNS with other applications such as remote desktop, connect to the domain name with the www subdomain. Example: www.Yourname.GotoMyHP.com or www.Yourname.HPShare.net, or if you use a private domain, use www.YourFamilyDomain.com. You can also disable the SSL forwarding by unchecking the SSL forwarding. To disable SSL, go to the Windows Home Server console. Click modify on remote access, and under Domain Name, click details. This will give you the option is disable SSL web forwarding. (Not recommended)

Security Warning when you connect to your First generation MediaSmart server? This is due to the HTTPS protocol and not having a certificate that matches the domain name. See the above information on SSL Certificates. You can send your webshare visitors to http://www.YourDomainName.HPShare.net (or whatever HP name you selected) and they will not get this warning. You can also disable the SSL forwarding by unchecking the SSL forwarding. To disable SSL, go to the Windows Home Server console. Click modify on remote access, and under Domain Name, click details. This will give you the option is disable SSL web forwarding. (Not recommended).
