Using
TZO with Argosoft
FTP server
|
| |
The Argosoft FTP server is a quick
and easy way to get your domain name online and
transferring files. TZO has partnered with Argosoft
to bring you Dynamic DNS and FTP all in one package.
You can try the Argosoft FREE versions or buy their
PRO versions for all your FTP needs. This tutorial
will show you how to configure the FTP server and the
TZO Dynamic DNS. Once you've installed the FTP
server, follow the examples shown below to configure
your mail server for your domain(s). These tutorials
are shown using the PRO versions, and may vary
slightly from the freeware and shareware
versions. |

Once
you get the server installed, launch the program and
you will see the main interface as shown in the
screenshot below: |
| |
|
| |
 |
| |
|
| |
The
first thing you want to do is configure the options
of the server. As shown in the screenshot below,
click TOOLS, OPTIONS and continue on with the
tutorial below. |
| |
|
| |
 |
|
|
|
| |
Once you click on OPTIONS from the list, the
dialog shown below will appear. This dialog box has
several tabs with many options. Select the LOGGING
tab and make sure you have LOG FTP COMMANDS and LOG
TO FILE checked as shown below. This allows you to
review the logs for security and debugging purposes
at a later date.

|
| |
|
| |
The next
step is to set your greeting (optional). Click the
greeting tab as shown in the screenshot below. The
greeting is displayed to users when they log into
the FTP server.

|
| |
|
| |
Once you
finish setting the options, you want to add your
users. In this case, we will add 2 users - one with
read and list permissions, and one user with all
permissions. You can add as many users that you want,
and also set home directories for each user. To add
your users, click the TOOLS, USERS button from the
list as shown in the screenshot below:
 |
| |
You will now see the USER SETUP dialog box. Click
the button in the upper left corner to add a new
user as shown in the screenshot below. This will
pop up a dialog box to add a user.

|
| |
Once you click the add new user button as shown
above, you will see the dialog box shown below. You
now want to add your users. Add your users using
LOWERCASE on username and password settings. In
this case, we will add a user bob with a password
of test. (you should make your passwords stronger,
a mix of numbers and letters) We also made a
directory called FTPSERVER on our local C drive. We
then used this directory as the "home" directory
where each user will end up when they log in. Under
the rights section, check the READ and LIST
checkboxes to allow the user to list and read the
files in their home directory. Click OK to add this
user.

|
| |
We now add the user named poweruser and gave them
write and delete rights. You can add any name you
want for each username. Click OK when you are done
adding each user.

|
| |
Once you
add all the users, you will see each user shown in
the dialog below. You can edit the usernames and
passwords, by right-clicking on each user and
selecting PROPERTIES from the menu.

|
| |
Now that you have added all your users, you can
configure the TZO Dynamic DNS in the Argosoft
server. Click on TOOLS, Dynamic DNS as shown in the
screenshot below to configure your domain
name.
|
| |
 |
| |
| |
|
| |
Once you click on the Dynamic DNS option under the
TOOLS menu, you will see the screenshot below. If you
already have a TZO account, enter your subdomain or
private domain name, Key and Email address. If you do
not have a TZO account, and want to get a 30 day free
trial, click on the SIGN UP FOR A FREE TRIAL link.
This will direct you to the Argosoft/TZO site where
you can get your TZO Free trial key. Once you enter
your TZO account info, select the Connection type and
set the update frequency. This sets how often the
DDNS checks for a change in your IP Address. Click OK
once you are done.
 |
| |
|
| |
That's it! You should now Start the FTP server
by clicking on the "play" button or green arrow
under the File menu. The red square stops the
server. Click on the start and you should see
something similar to the screenshot below. Your
domain name will update when the server is started,
and your FTP server should be functional. Make sure
you open the proper FTP ports in your NAT router or
firewall. Port 21 TCP is the common port for FTP.
You may also need to open port 20 TCP if you are
using passive FTP.
You can create more users as you need them, and you
should be on your way to running your own FTP
server for your domain. Remember that TZO offers
many unique services for all of your needs. If you
are having problems with the FTP Server, please see
the TZO FAQ, or see the Argosoft help file or
website.
